Following Britain's agreement to leave the European Union, the right of residence for British nationals in France is changing.

All British nationals, regardless of when they arrived in France, will need to hold a residence permit from 1 October 2021.

During the transition period, British nationals and their family members residing in France before 31 December 2020 retain their acquired rights as EU citizens.

They must apply for a residence permit online, before 1 July 2021, via a special website ( http://invite.contacts-demarches.interieur.gouv.fr/ ). They will be issued with a residence permit stating « Accord de retrait du Royaume-Uni de l’Union Européenne ».

British nationals who wish to settle in France from 1 January 2021 will have to apply for a residence permit on the basis of the provisions of ordinary law. They will therefore have to apply for a visa from the French consular authorities and then for a residence permit directly from the prefecture in their place of residence.

British nationals who have been legally resident in France for more than 5 years as of 31 December 2020 will have access to a 10-year permanent residence permit.

British nationals who have been legally resident in France for less than 5 years as of 31 December 2020 will be able to obtain a 5-year permit. They will have to prove that they are in one of the following situations:

  • Either be in paid employment or self-employment (or have been in paid employment and be registered as a jobseeker);
  • Have sufficient resources for themselves and their family, as well as health insurance;
  • or be in education or vocational training and have health insurance
  • Or be a family member of a British national who has settled in France before 31 December 2020 and has a right of residence there (spouse, partner, child, ascendant or family member who is supported by or forms part of the household of a British national)

From 1 October 2021, all British nationals, regardless of when they arrived in France, will need to have a valid residence permit.
