The Phobos-Grunt Martian space mission. Within the framework of the Russian space mission "Phobos-Grunt", a laser spectrometer, "TDLAS" (PI G. Durry), has been developped with the Institute for Space Research (IKI, Moscow) to analyze in situ the composition of the soil of Phobos, the Martian moon.This tunable laser diode spectrometer measures the H2O, CO2 and C2H2 isotopes in the evaporates resulting from the pyrolysis of a Phobos soil sample [Durry & al., Applied Physics, 99, p.339, 2010] . A capillary tube is filled with the gases from the pyrolysis of a soil sample; four antimonide laser diodes are coupled with the tube; the laser beams are partially absorbed in the tube by the ambient molecules. The absorption of laser energy is related to the molecular concentrations using the Beer-Lambert law. The development of TDLAS was supported by the CNES and the CNRS. A joint team between the GSMA laboratory, the IKI space research Institute and the technical department of the INSU\CNRS was involved in the TDLAS project.

A picture of the SDLA balloonborne near-infrared diode laser spectrometer (Durry & Mégie, Appl. Opt., 1999 and 2000) taken in Kiruna (in northern Sweden) in February 1999 during the THESEO European campaign dedicated to polar startospheric ozone. The SDLA sensor provides in situ H2O, CH4 and CO2 measurements in the troposphere and the lower stratosphere by absorption spectroscopy.

<br>
Examples of in situ vertical concentration profiles of methane yielded by the SDLA spectrometer in the troposphere and the lower stratosphere at mid- and high latitudes. The concentration values are retrieved from the in situ absorption spectra recorded in the 1.65 micron spectral region at 1s-intervals (Durry & Hauchecorne, Atmos. Chem. and Phys., 2005)..

<br>

Examples of in situ vertical concentration profiles of water vapor achieved with the SDLA spectrometer operated from stratospheric balloons at mid- and high latitudes. The high dynamical range of the measurements provided bt the SDLA sensor makes it possible to probe continuously the troposphere and the lower stratosphere despite the strong differences in the H2O amounts between the two regions of the atmosphere.

<br>

The new PicoSDLA laser diode hygrometer. This sensor uses an antimonide laser diode emitting at 2.6 micron to yield in situ measurements of H2O in the troposphere and the lower stratosphere from weather balloons (Durry et al., Appl. Phys. B, 2008). Science objectives: trends in stratospheric H2O, water vapor in the tropical tropopause, satellite validation.
